Europe’s first carbon-negative biorefinery
Since 2015, Boğaziçi University's Sarıtepe Campus has been carbon-neutral. The INDEPENDENT project, which began operations in 2021, has an annual capacity to capture and utilize approximately 1,200 tons of carbon dioxide, making it Europe's first carbon-negative biorefinery.
By offering algae-based alternative products in the energy, food, health, environment, agriculture, and livestock sectors, it achieves dual sustainability by saving on all fossil energy-consuming resources used in production.
